The History of
Ugandan Asians

On Saturday the 8th of October, Fiyaz and myself made the journey to York to attend the Uganda 50 York event organised by the brilliant Shamim Eimaan.

Hosted at the University at York the event brough together individuals from different backgrounds and different generations to celebrate and reflect on the 50 years since the 1972 expulsion that led to the Ugandan Asians arriving in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, unlike Leicester, London and Birmingham the knowledge and representation of the Ugandan Asian community in cities further north like York has been lacking and thus makes events like this all the more special.

A reflection of this was the fact that there were representatives from Leicester in the form of Navrang Arts and their brilliant Rebuilding Lives exhibition as well Noreen Nasim who hails from Sheffield.

We spoke with those who had experienced the expulsion as well as 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Ugandan Asians who were interested in understanding more about their community and their history.

It was an emotional and enlightening day and what connected us all was a desire to make sure this history and those lived experiences are never forgotten.
